The #LNG terminal near the Greek city of Alexandroupolis was officially launched

The #LNG terminal near the Greek city of Alexandroupolis was officially launched by the Prime Ministers of Greece and Bulgaria Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Kiril Petkov.

Marking a new era for energy connectivity and security in the region, the launch of the construction of the project for this #FSRU will secure a new gateway for natural gas deliveries to Europe. “This is a moment of urgency and a moment of truth for Europe. We’re seeing a new dawn for European energy independence”, announced the President of the European Council Charles Michel, who personally attended the commencement ceremony.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Kiril Petkov highlighted Greece’s continuous support for only for the completion of the LNG terminal, where Bulgaria is also a shareholder, but for the completion of the #IGB pipeline as well. “Together we can achieve so much more - our strength lies in unity”, he noted. "Within the next 20 months, Greece will be able to import much more LNG with increased liquification capacity”, said Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

The project FSRU Alexandroupolis is being developed by gastrade s.a.. The terminal is of great significance to the energy connectivity in the region - together with the IGB #pipeline it can provide energy supplies to multiple counties in the SEE region including Serbia, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine etc. The completion of the project will allow boosting IGB’s capacity from 3 bcm/y to 5 bcm/y, further increasing the region’s energy independence from Russian energy sources. Such talks for increasing the interconnector’s capacity are already being held.
